“On the occasion of World Pangolin Day on February 17, 2024, the Institute of Nature and Environmental Conservation (INEC-GHANA) in partnership with Kumasi Zoological Gardens and some students from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, took an impactful step towards wildlife conservation by visiting Toase Senior High School. The visit aimed to engage with the students and broaden their understanding of the significance of pangolins in our ecosystem.

The team from INEC-GHANA and Kumasi Zoological Gardens shared insights on the critical need to protect pangolins and highlighted the alarming rate at which our forests are depleting due to the illegal trafficking and exploitation of these unique creatures.

As part of the initiative, a team from INEC and Kumasi Zoological Gardens engaged with the students and educated them about pangolins. The interactive session included discussions on the significance of pangolins in the ecosystem, the threats they face, and the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these unique creatures.

One of the key messages conveyed to the students was the role of pangolins in maintaining a healthy balance in the environment and the cascading effects of their declining populations on forest health. By highlighting the interconnectedness of all living organisms, the team emphasized the importance of preserving biodiversity for future generations.

The event was educational and interactive, as students were encouraged to express their creativity through artwork centered on pangolin conservation. To acknowledge their efforts and to foster a deeper interest in environmental stewardship, awards were presented to students who participated in the art competition.

This initiative is part of INEC-GH’s continuous commitment to educate the younger generation about the importance of preserving our natural world for future prosperity.”
